CRecTech and Green Lagoon Technology Sign MOU to Pilot Bio-Methanol Production from Biogas in Malaysia

27 Jun 2025

CRecTech and Green Lagoon Technology partner to pilot bio-methanol production from Malaysian palm oil biogas, advancing regional decarbonization

CRecTech, a Singapore-based deep-tech startup pioneering renewable methanol solutions, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Green Lagoon Technology (GLT), Malaysia’s leading biogas project developer, to jointly explore the production of bio-methanol from biogas derived from palm oil mills.

The MOU was officially signed on 26 June 2025 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, by Mr. Chan Sow Keong, CEO of GLT, and Dr. Lim Kang Hui, CEO of CRecTech. The signing was witnessed by Dr. Jane Zhang, Head of Southeast Asia/Singapore, Fellows, at Breakthrough Energy, which supports high-impact innovations in the climate and energy transition.

GLT is a leading provider of biogas solutions in Southeast Asia, dedicated to transforming wastewater into clean, renewable energy, with expertise that lies in designing, constructing, and managing biogas plants that convert palm oil mill effluent (POME) and other organic waste into usable energy sources to help businesses reduce their carbon footprint and improve environmental sustainability. CRecTech, on the other hand, has developed a proprietary catalytic technology to turn biogas into bio-methanol in an efficient and affordable manner.

Under this strategic collaboration, CRecTech and GLT will assess the feasibility of deploying CRecTech’s proprietary catalytic technology at an existing GLT-operated biogas power plant. The project aims to demonstrate the commercial viability of converting biogas into renewable bio-methanol, a promising low-carbon fuel for maritime applications.

“This partnership represents a critical step toward validating CRecTech’s affordable bio-methanol production technology at scale,” said Dr. Lim Kang Hui, CEO of CRecTech. “By integrating our catalytic process with GLT’s biogas infrastructure, we hope to establish a scalable pathway for producing low-carbon methanol from local biomass resources.”

“We are excited to work with CRecTech to bring this innovative solution to Malaysia,” added Mr. Chan Sow Keong, CEO of Green Lagoon Technology. “This pilot will not only extend the value chain of our existing biogas assets but also contribute meaningfully to the region’s decarbonization goals.”

The collaboration reflects both parties’ shared commitment to advancing circular economy models and renewable energy deployment in Southeast Asia. Results from the pilot will inform future scale-up and commercialization efforts across the region.
