CRecTech and 3Y Energy join forces to advance bio-methanol as a next-generation marine fuel, accelerating maritime decarbonization
CRecTech, a leading innovator in renewable methanol production, and 3Y Energy, a deep-tech spin-off focused on sustainable engine technologies, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to collaborate on the development and evaluation of bio-methanol as a next-generation marine fuel.
The MOU was officially signed on 23 June 2025 in Singapore by Dr. Zong Yichen, CEO of 3Y Energy, and Dr. Lim Kang Hui, CEO of CRecTech. This strategic partnership aims to accelerate the maritime sector’s transition toward low-carbon fuels in line with global decarbonization goals.
3Y Energy brings to the collaboration its Bio-Fuel Testing Platform—an advanced system designed to assess combustion performance and emissions of alternative fuels across various marine engine configurations. CRecTech contributes its proprietary catalytic technology that enables the cost-effective conversion of biogas into bio-methanol, a renewable fuel with strong potential for maritime decarbonization.
“The shipping industry urgently needs scalable, practical fuel alternatives. Bio-methanol is a promising candidate, and this collaboration will generate the technical validation aligned with ISO 6583:2024 needed to support its deployment,” said Dr. Lim Kang Hui, CEO of CRecTech.
“Through this partnership, we aim to provide analytical insights into the combustion and emission performance of bio-methanol, helping shipowners make informed fuel transition decisions,” added Dr. Zong Yichen, CEO of 3Y Energy.
The joint effort will involve the evaluation of the combustion behavior, emission profiles, and performance characteristics of bio-methanol fuel blends using advanced analytical tools and engine testing protocols. Results from the collaboration are expected to support regulatory assessments and facilitate the adoption of bio-methanol as a compliant and scalable green fuel for the maritime industry.
